Ever read the Hunger Games series? Divergent? Or something more classical like Fahrenheit 451 or Lord of the Flies. Many books like the few listed above and similar books are being banned and challenged because it contains inappropriate content such as violence, sex, dystopia, alcohol and drug abuse, corruption within government. Reading affects all lives, in positive and negative ways. I believe that these books and many others should be banned.
A reason of why these books should be banned because they contain inappropriate content. An example is of Crank written by Ellen Hopkins, banned at many locations due to drug use, language, and sexual orientation. In one scene the protagonist Kristina uses drugs and gets raped, later asking a different boy to have sex with her as comfort. I find this quite disturbing and have feeling that many others do as well. Although for readers who are facing the same or similar issues may be inspired to seek help, realizing how worse the situation fluctuates, other readers may feel uncomfortable.
Another reason of why these books are banned because they can affect lives, in negative ways. Reading is a way of relaxing, improve literacy and a great way to see the world a different perspective. We channel many emotions in which some may not be able to handle. And reading these books may provoke people who are vulnerable. In the book Willow by Julia Hoban page 68 " ...as she slices into into her flesh. The blade bites so deeply she almost swoons....the razor doesn't hurt her.Not really...Willow savagely swipes at her wrists. Not like some things could." People who read about such dark matter may recall of past issues and feel that self infliction is a good way to cope. And preventing such issue could be done by banning books.
In conclusion I believe that these books should be banned from environments where young and impressional children have access to. Due to inappropriate content and overwhelming emotion provoking text I believe these books should be saved for mature people, who can handle it.
